The incident occurred around 8:40 a.m., and the fire quickly escalated to a 3-11 alarm, with at least 10 ambulances dispatched. Firefighters worked tirelessly on the seventh floor, while others tried to reach residents on balconies on the opposite side of the building. The blaze reportedly started in a bedroom on the seventh floor before spreading to an apartment on the eighth floor. By 9:25 a.m., the fire was under control.
Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford confirmed that two men—one in his 30s and the other in his 40s—were found on the seventh floor, both in full cardiac arrest. They were pronounced dead at different hospitals. A woman was discovered in the building’s lobby, also in cardiac arrest, but she was successfully revived by paramedics using CPR and taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center for treatment.
One firefighter suffered minor injuries during the operation. Despite the severity of the fire, no evacuation was ordered, as officials advised residents to stay in their apartments. Firefighters went door to door to check on them.
The scene outside the building was chaotic, with water from hoses and hydrants freezing into sheets of ice. Dozens of emergency vehicles lined South Shore Drive, adding to the tense atmosphere.
