Finders of the Tomb of Tutankhamun were questioned: Archaeology or Tomb Raider?

Howard White contributed to the discovery of the Pharaoh Tutankhamun tomb in Egypt and is a famous archeologist. Some people now cite evidence that White is actually a tomb robber.

Howard Carter, one of the most prestigious archaeologists in the UK, since the opening of the gates of the ancient Egyptian Pharaoh's Tutankhamen's mausoleum in 1922, Carter’s name is always associated with this great excavation. He is esteemed as great. Archeologists and pioneers of the study of Egypt. However, with the gradual disclosure of historical data, people's doubts about him gradually surfaced - is this famous archaeologist who is also the tomb of the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun?

On an early morning in November 1922, at dawn, Howard Carter held an iron bar and opened the door to a grave in the "Valley of the Kings" in Egypt. He held the candle in one hand, trembling and pushing open the door, and he was facing the stale atmosphere that had been closed for more than 3,000 years. Carter was so excited that he stuttered and said "Great!"

Archeologists return home empty handed

Excavation of the Tutankhamun tomb is considered one of the most glorious moments in the history of archeology. More than 5,000 pieces of funerary objects were found in the four rooms of the grave, including furniture, perfume bottles, fly swatters and ostrich feathers. Most importantly, Carter discovered a skeleton with a weight of approximately 134.3 kilograms of gold and found the mummy of the King of Tutankhamun wearing a gold mask.

Pharaoh Tutankhamun was not originally known to people. The excavation of the mausoleum vividly presented the image of the juvenile pharaoh. Tutankhamun was born about 1340 BC and took over Pharaoh when he was just 12 years old. Later, he married his sister and both of his children died. They found two small ones in the grave. Gorgeous cunning.

Tutankhamun died at the age of 18. People suspected that the little Pharaoh had died of a driving accident because he loved to take his dog and chase the ostrich in the desert with a two-wheeled chariot — six chariots in his tomb.

Because of this great discovery, Carter was hailed by the archaeological community as "a passionate and honest idealist." The world's most famous universities scrambled to invite him as an honorary professor. When he was the president of the United States Kevin Coolidge invited him to drink tea, he went to New York and other places delivered a series of speeches. Howard Carter is hailed as "the last and greatest treasure hunter of modern times."

The excavation of Tutankhamun’s tomb triggered a fight that was not known to everyone. Carter hopes to send the treasures back to Britain and the United States as much as possible. However, this plan was opposed. Although Egypt had been a British protectorate since 1914, the department responsible for archaeological excavations was in the hands of the French. In the end, Carter had to leave all the treasures in Cairo and returned to the UK empty-handed.

Relics of the Tomb appear everywhere

Of course, this is only an official statement. In fact, people suspected that the Carter team secretly took a lot of baby out of Egypt. In recent decades, such suspicions have become more and more serious with the emergence of treasures from Tutankhamun's tomb in museums such as Europe and America.

One of the latest discoveries was a "deacon attendant in the Louvre" in France. When Egyptian Egyptian antiquities scientist Christian Ruben saw this small sculpture, he could hardly believe his own eyes. "This sculpture bears the name of King Tutankhamun and may only come from him. tomb."

Similarly, the two golden eagle heads found in Kansas City of the United States also carved Tutankhamen's name. After inspection, it was found that the two gold-headed eagle heads were originally embedded in Pharaoh's collar and were removed during the mummy movement. Carter hid them and gave it to his dentist as a gift.

The collection of Tutankhamun tombs also appeared in Germany. The director of a museum in Saxony, Germany, confirmed that he has collected some blue ceramic beads. "When Carter discovered the beads while cleaning up the tomb, he hid it and gave it to his secretary." The curator acquired the treasures at an auction.

In the 1970s, Thomas Harvin, curator of the Metropolitan Museum of New York, put forward similar questions. He consulted some internal sources and found that Carter and his sponsors, Earl Canavon of Britain, secretly collected a lot of treasures. For example, they once gave the King of Kings I of Egypt a gold ring with a scene carved out by Tutankhamen. American oil tycoon Edward Harkness also received a gold ring.

Carter’s burglary was captured

As a sponsor of Carter’s archeological activity, Count Canavern counted on returns. On December 22, 1922, during the excavation of the mausoleum, the count secretly sent a letter from Britain to Carter, stating that he wanted "unlabeled things," that is, those treasures that were not clearly marked and difficult to discern.

Carter’s robbery was once arrested. He hides a bust of Pharaoh Tutankhamun in a humble burial chamber in an attempt to escape Egypt’s official inspections and registrations. The “Sculpture Art Masterpiece” was later discovered by an inspection official in a large wine box. . Carter was warned but the scandal was not disclosed at the time.

However, in most cases, Carter’s tricks worked. A group of valuable small objects disappeared without a trace. Who stole them and when they were stolen? Where are these last treasures? These questions are still a mystery in the history of Egyptian antiquities.

The New York Metropolitan Museum has 20 collections that are believed to have originated from the tomb of Tutankhamun. However, it is not easy to trace back the source of these collections. The collector did not disclose the relevant information.

"No one wants to talk about these unpleasant things." Christian Ruben said that Carter's status as a great archeologist is almost unshakable in the United Kingdom. The fact that he made money through antique deals was ignored.

Carter accused of making false statements

Another serious accusation against Carter was that in order to hide the treasures of the Tomb of Tutankhamen, he fabricated a lie and claimed that the tomb had been robbed several times in ancient times. This was misleading to later archaeological researchers.

Carter even "lively" depicts the graves of the tomb. “After Tutankhamun’s funeral ceremony, the thieves quickly robbed the tombs with the support of some corrupt tomb management officials.” Carter’s evidence was that when he entered the grave, he found that the door had been kicked in and stayed on the door. There are traces of resealing. The box in the chamber was opened and the bottle was thrown to the ground.

Carter’s claim became the archeological material of later researchers’ credit. But is this true? After all, when Carter and his assistants entered the chamber, no independent witness saw the scene.

Nowadays, more and more people cast doubtful eyes on these robberies described by Carter. Christian Ruben believes that Carter "exaggerated the facts." Ruben's colleague, Egyptian antiquities scholar Rolf Klaus, made a point: Carter "falsified the plunder."

Klaus analyzed that the archaeological provisions of Egypt at that time provided that if the excavated tomb was once looted, the collection could be divided. If the tomb of Pharaoh is intact, it will be returned to Egyptian state without conditions. "In this case, it is clear that the excavators must act according to their own interests."
